Holcim Elevate (Formerly Firestone) Roofing in Pasadena, TX

A roof file in a plant maintenance office may still say Firestone on the cover. The warranty letter says Firestone, the invoice says Firestone, and so does the product data tucked in the binder. Then the manufacturer became Holcim Elevate, the labels changed, and a facility director opening that file for a leak in Pasadena, TX has two names to reconcile before anyone can call a repair crew and be sure the paperwork matches the roof.

It is the same manufacturer's product family. UltraPly TPO and UltraPly PVC are the thermoplastic sheets, and RubberGard is the EPDM line, with polyiso insulation and metal accessories rounding out the system. What needs sorting is the file, the age of the roof, and what the roof has been through since it went down.

Trace the Firestone Name Through the Paperwork

We begin with the binder. Warranty letters, installation records, inspection reports and invoices tell us the system, the date and who touched the roof afterward. Anything signed under the Firestone Building Products name remains part of the roof's history, and the new name needs to sit beside it in the owner's records so a later claim does not stall on a mismatch.

Then we match the paper to the roof. A walk with a probe and a camera confirms whether the sheet on the building is UltraPly or RubberGard, how many repairs it has carried, and whether anything on it came from another maker. Keeping both names in one roof warranty management file means the next facility director sees the whole thread, not a stack of unlabeled letters.

Judge the Roofs That Outlived Ike

Hurricane Ike crossed up the east side of Houston in September 2008. Since then Harvey dropped record rain, a June 2023 thunderstorm line set a 97 mph gust at Bush Intercontinental, higher than Ike managed there, and Beryl and the May 2024 derecho followed. A Holcim Elevate roof that was in place for all of that has earned a careful look, and some are simply worn out.

We test the survivors, not the labels. Cores show whether the insulation is dry, probes show whether the seams are still tight, and the fastener pull-out test on a mechanically attached roof shows whether the deck still holds. When the results come back clean, a repair program or a roof recover may add years. When they do not, the report says so and gives the owner a date to plan around.

Choose Among UltraPly TPO, PVC and RubberGard by Duty

UltraPly TPO is a white, reflective sheet that suits broad, plain roofs. That matters where Houston's airports hit 109 F in the summer of 2023. UltraPly PVC is the choice where grease, oils or process vapors reach the roof, since PVC stands up to them better. RubberGard is Holcim Elevate's EPDM, a rubber sheet that handles ponding water, hail and hard foot traffic well.

We match the sheet to the way the building is used, not to the catalog page. A manufacturing building with exhaust near the roof edge gets a different answer than a self-storage facility with no exhaust at all. A roof full of mechanical units needs walk pads and a thicker sheet in the traffic zones. The decision is easiest when the facility director, the maintenance lead and our crew look at the roof together.

Fit the Welding Into the Shutdown Window

Roofs near the Deer Park refinery, which covers about 2,300 acres on the Ship Channel, or inside the Deer Park industrial area, work to a different clock than office roofs. A turnaround brings a surge of extra workers on site, restricted lanes and strict contractor requirements. Roofing can be scheduled inside or beside that window, but only if the badging, orientation and hot work permit are in place well before the crane arrives.

We plan backward from the date the plant needs the roof closed. Material staging comes first, then the crane pick, then the sections in the order that keeps the process buildings dry. A mechanically attached sheet moves faster than an adhered one, so when time is short and the deck is sound, attachment method can be the schedule's biggest lever.

Spread the Replacements Across Several Budget Years

For an owner with several Holcim Elevate roofs, not every roof needs to be replaced at once, and not every roof can wait. Roofs are scored by age, moisture, seam condition, and what a failure would interrupt, then given dates in a roof capital plan. The riskiest and oldest go first. Better roofs get maintenance, and a few may need no more than periodic cleaning and a drain check.

Cost moves with a short list of things: the amount of saturated insulation removed, the count of curbs, drains and penetrations, the difficulty of crane access, and the sheet the building calls for. If a change of use or a remodel alters the building's energy load, Pasadena's permit office now looks at the 2024 energy code with a cover inspection and a final one, so the owner asks the permit office early whether a reroof with new insulation falls under that rule, before the plan is final. Early answers keep a budget from being rewritten in the last month.

Manufacturer names on older records may differ from the product name used for current ordering, so verify the issued documents for the actual roof. Record membrane type, thickness, reinforcement, seam method, attachment, and any coating in separate fields. A system comparison should focus on the building's substrate, exposure, and maintenance needs, not on a name alone. Before a repair, use the applicable technical instructions and confirm whether the work affects warranty status. Keep product data and installation records with the roof-zone map so a future contractor can identify the assembly without assuming every section uses the same material. That is especially useful where roofs were installed in different phases.

Commercial Roofing Questions

Our paperwork says Firestone Building Products. Does the name change affect our roof?

The roof is the same, but the name on future paperwork will differ. Keep every Firestone document with the roof file and add the Holcim Elevate name beside it. If a warranty claim is needed, having both names documented in one place prevents delays while someone tries to establish that the two refer to the same manufacturer.

We have an older UltraPly roof that has weathered several storms. Is it worth repairing?

Often it is, if the insulation is dry and the seams are tight. A moisture survey and a handful of core samples answer the question quickly. When those tests come back clean, repairs at the flashings and seams keep the roof in service. When they do not, the report supports a replacement budget and gives you a defensible date.

Does mechanical attachment or full adhesion make more sense on a plant roof?

Mechanical attachment is faster and less sensitive to humid mornings, which helps when the shutdown is short. Full adhesion removes fasteners from the deck and spreads wind load across the surface, which suits buildings where a fastener tip cannot show below. We weigh both against the deck type, the schedule and the wind exposure of the site.

Our plant exhaust falls on the membrane. Which sheet holds up?

PVC generally outlasts the other single-plies where oils and solvents settle on the roof, and TPO and EPDM are more affected. We ask what the plant vents and where the exhaust falls, then choose the membrane or a protective layer accordingly. A fresh look every few years is wise, because a process change inside the plant can change what lands on the roof.

Can Holcim Elevate roofs be coated instead of replaced?

Sometimes, when the sheet is sound and the insulation is dry. A coating adds reflectance and seals minor flaws, but it cannot rescue wet insulation or open seams. The same dry-substrate test applies on a Duro-Last or Johns Manville roof before anyone mixes a bucket.
